V8 Supercars break into new international markets with 2009 Alaskan Race
Release date: 22/12/2007
V8 Supercars will take another step towards becoming the world’s premier touring car series, with the announcement today that the series will run a round in the North Pole, Alaska from 2009. A new permanent ice circuit will be used for the event with the race being run in the suburb of Sitka.
The contract between V8 Supercars Australia and the Alaskan Government ensures that the event will run for at least five years from 2009 unitl 2014.
The event has come about as V8 Supecars Australia looked to expand the series international portfolio. Singapore was originally considered to host the third international event, however breakdown in talks with the Singapore Government led to bids from other nations.
V8 Supercars Australia chairman Tony Cochrane said ‘It’s fantastic for all the people of Alaska that they can finally see a round of our series. We have a strong cult following in that region of the world, and over the next year we will be strongly promoting the series to ensure that we have a great event’.
Gibson Freight will again transport the equipment for the series and teams using two specially modified Boeing 747’s, continuing their successful partnership that sees them transport freight to all international rounds.
Dunlop has also announced that due to the extreme conditions of the North Pole, they will supply a different tyre for the first time since 2002, running the Dunlop SuperStud tyre. This also marks a landmark moment in the series, as it’s the first time the cars will race with studded tyres.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: New overseas round for 2009!
I can't believe this! But wait! There's more!
To help promote the event, the North Pole’s most popular celebrity, Santa Clause, will race a 33rd car, using a license that will be created specifically for the event.
Speaking on the news, he stated ‘I’m really looking forward to what is going to be a tremendous event for the people of Alaska. V8 Supercars is very popular in the North Pole, my elves and I stay up and watch every round. And to race in the event is going to be very exciting. It is a little known fact that I do a bit of racing in my spare time, it helps keep me sharp for the big toy run on Christmas Eve.’
Clause will race a VE Commodore to be prepared by Walkinshaw Performace. Holden motorsport director Simon McNamara said ‘It’s a delight to be working with a legend such as Santa. He suits our image, and will hopefully help Holden appeal to younger demographics. It’s my understanding that he’s done a bit of ice racing before, so you never know, we might just end up with Santa’s Commodore taking round honours up in Alaska!’
Asked why he chose to drive with Holden, Clause stated ‘I had good offers from both Ford and Holden, but it was a better fit with Holden. And I suppose it wouldn’t make much sense if the big man in red wasn’t driving a big red car!’
